This year we will be celebrating 50 years of club gliding at Pocklington airfield.

On December 28th 1969 a Slingsby T-31 glider was aerotowed out of the nearby Melbourne airfield to land at Pocklington. It was piloted by Joe Bloggs, the chief flying instructor of what was then the Leeds Gliding Club, and Jim Smith.

Melbourne airfield had been the home of the Leeds Gliding Club for several years but it wasn’t the first home or indeed the first name of the club. The club came into being in 196x as section of the Leeds Transport Sports Club and first flew from Somewhereelse.
